The history of Wensleydale State School

  • 1869

    Wensleydale opened as a common school in 1869.

    Mark Halkyard was the first head teacher.

    The average number of students was 41 (22 boys, 19 girls).

    The school building was brick with room for up to 60 students.

  • 1873

    Wensleydale became a state school.

    The teacher's house was repaired

  • 1914

    J.G. Johnstone, MLA, opened a new school building.

    Walter. H. Scott was the head teacher. The average number of students was 32.

  • 1926

    Joseph Parish buys the old school building.

  • 1951

    There are only seven students enrolled.

    The school was unstaffed.

  • 1953

    Wensleydale closed in 1953.

    The school building was moved to Colac West State School (No. 4064).
