Transforming the teaching experience

Career Start is transforming the first years of teaching for a new generation of Victorian teachers.

Career Start is a structured program that aims to improve the experience of graduate teachers as they enter the profession.

It provides graduates with time release from face-to-face teaching to engage with induction support, a dedicated mentor, networking opportunities and professional learning to develop professional practice, professional identity, and support wellbeing.

For Nganboo Borron School teacher Jack McPhail it has been a game changer.

‘You’re able to talk to experienced educators who have been there, who have done the learning, who have done the research, and are able to support you to become the best teacher that you possibly can be,’ he said.

Following a successful 3-year pilot program, Career Start has expanded to support graduate teachers in all government schools in:

  • Inner Gippsland
  • North Eastern Melbourne
  • Outer Eastern Melbourne
  • Southern Melbourne
  • Western Melbourne.

From 2025, it will be rolled out to schools in:

  • Hume
  • Merri-bek
  • Brimbank Melton
  • Goulburn
  • Ovens-Murray
  • Mallee
  • Outer Gippsland
  • Barwon
  • Central Highlands.
