The history of Violet Town Primary School

  • 1858

    Violet Town School opened as a national school in 1858. The first head teacher was Edmund Freeman.

    Classes were held in a private home and the school did not have many students.

  • 1862

    Violet Town School became a common school in 1862.

  • 1866

    By 1866 classes were being taught in the local church.

  • 1869

    A new school building was built beside the post office.

  • 1870s

    The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.

    A new school building was built in 1875 that was big enough for 90 students, it was made from brick and had 2 rooms.

  • 1908

    The schoolhouse was renovated in 1908. An extra room and an entrance porch were added.

    A house for the head teacher was also built.

  • 1922

    The Mothers' Club was established in 1922 to help raise money for the school.

  • 1940

    The schoolhouse was renovated again.

  • 1964

    A staff room and another classroom were added to the school building.

    A school bus service was started in 1964.

  • 1970

    The name of the school was changed to Violet Town Primary School in 1970.

  • 1994

    Violet Town Primary School closed and was combined with other schools in 1994 to form Peranbin Primary College (No. 5367).

    The following schools were combined:

    • Violet Town Primary School (No. 640)
    • Badaginnie Primary School (No. 1731)
    • Strathbogie Primary School (No. 2181)
    • Swanpool Primary School (No. 1310)
    • Tatong Primary Schoool (No. 3006)

    The site of Violet Town Primary School is still a campus of Peranbin Primary College.
