The history of Toolern Vale Primary School
1869
The school opened as a common school in 1869. When it opened it was called Yangardook.
The first head teacher was John Dunstan and there were 34 students enrolled.
There was a schoolhouse and a house for the teacher.
1870s
The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1875.
The name of the school was changed from Yangardook to Toolern in 1875.
The name ‘Toolern' came from the name of the creek that ran beside the school. The name of this creek was Toolaam Creek.
1914
The teachers house had become very run down and was removed.
1930
A pine plantation was planted in 1930. The trees would be sold when grown to raise money for the school.
1931
The name of the school was changed again to Toolern Vale.
1965
A fire destroyed the schoolhouse and the pine plantation. A new timber schoolhouse was built.
There were 24 students enrolled at the school in 1965.
1970
The name of the school changed to Toolern Vale Primary School in 1970.
1993
Toolern Vale Primary School closed in 1993 when it combined with Sydenham West Primary School (No. 3862) to form Toolern Vale and District Primary School (No. 5414).
The new school is located on the site of the Toolern Vale Primary School.
