The history of Somerton State School

  • 1850

    The school opened as a national school in 1850. When it opened it was called Yuroke School.

    The first head teacher was James Tydeman.

    The first schoolhouse was a brick building with shingle roof. There were two rooms for the head teacher to live in.

  • 1862

    The school became a common school in 1862.

  • 1870s

    The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.

    By 1875 the number of students at the school was growing. A new and larger schoolhouse was built. The head teacher lived in the old schoolhouse.

  • 1900

    The old schoolhouse was sold and moved elsewhere in 1900.

  • 1956

    Somerton closed in 1956.
