Returning teacher support services

Supports and information for teachers considering a return to teaching in Victorian classrooms.

Professional development available for returning teachers

Teachers not currently working in schools and seeking professional development options to support their return can register their interest for the Returning Teacher Support Service (RTSS).

After registering, a member of the Teacher Re-engagement team will contact you to discuss your return and support needs, and which professional development options are right for you.

A wide range of free professional development options are available, including but not limited to:

  • 1-on-1 employability coaching on resume writing, addressing key selection criteria, and interview skills
  • mental health and wellbeing tools
  • teaching writing, including narrative, persuasive, and informative writing courses
  • effective teaching strategies, including High Impact Teaching Strategies (HITS)
  • classroom behaviour management
  • use of technology and internet in the classroom; and
  • curriculum planning and assessment.

Are you ready for employment?

Registration requirements

All teachers seeking employment in Victoria are required to hold a valid registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). Returning teachers that do not currently hold VIT registration are encouraged to contact the VIT directly to discuss registration requirements and pathways.

Finding jobs through the Applicant Pool

Teachers who hold a valid registration with the VIT and feel classroom ready could consider joining the Applicant Pool. The Applicant Pool is a streamlined and efficient way for you to connect with school recruiters based on your needs and preferences. Once you have set up your Applicant Pool profile, you will match to roles based on your preferences.

Returning teacher placements

The Teacher Re-Engagement Initiative (TREI) supports returning teachers through funded placements of up to 40 days in Victorian government schools. Participating teachers can re-familiarise themselves with the school environment, take part in classroom observations and other teaching activities, and receive mentoring from current teachers.

Please note that the current allocation of TREI placements has now been filled.
