The history of Prahran State School

  • 1852

    Prahran opened on Chapel Street an independent church school in 1852.

    This school closed as church members believed they could not accept aid from the state.

  • 1853

    A national school under the same name and school number opened in 1853.

    School was taught in a house that the head teacher Mr Craig shared with his brother's family.

  • 1860

    The number of students grew to 100.

  • 1862

    Head teacher Messervy bought the Prahran Hall to accommodate the growing number of students.

  • 1873

    The Department of Education took over the lease of the building when the school became a state school in 1873.

  • 1877

    The school closed in 1877.
