The history of Newlyn Primary School

  • 1861

    Newlyn opened as a national school in 1861. A wooden school building was built.

  • 1862

    The school became a common school in 1862.

  • 1865

    A teacher's residence was located close to the school.

  • 1870s

    An infant room, for younger students, was added in 1870.

    The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.

  • 1887

    A new brick school building opened in 1887.

  • 1913

    A new teacher's residence was added in 1913.

  • 1917

    The school was remodelled in 1917. Lighting was improved and a windmill was installed.

  • 1970

    The school was renamed Newlyn Primary School in 1970.

  • 2022

    Newlyn Primary School is still in operation.
