The history of Mordialloc Beach Primary School

  • 1868

The school opened as a common school in 1868. The first head teacher was Rebecca Waugh and 36 students were enrolled (22 boys and 14 girls).

  • 1870s

The building was in a poor state due to high winds in the area. Parents refused to send their children to the school.

The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.

  • 1882

A new railway line led to an increase in the local population. Enrolment increased because of this. Wind was still an issue at the school. Head teacher Robert Riggs sent the students home because of the building 'bending with the force of the wind'.

  • 1884

A new brick building opened in 1884. The number of students enrolled increased to 100. Six classes were held in a single room. A new room was added.

  • 1910s

A second story was added between 1918 and 1919. It was opened by Frank Tate, Director of Education. The school grounds were also expanded at the time.

  • 1950s

Two prefabricated classrooms were added on the Barkly Street school site in 1954. A wooden school building with two classrooms was also added. Four new timber rooms were added a few years later.

  • 1963

A library and canteen were added in 1963.

  • 1967

The land opposite Barkly Street was bought to be used as a playground.
