The history of Moorabbin Primary School

  • 1870s

    Moorabbin opened as a common school in 1872. It replaced Common School No. 422. The first head teacher was Charles Sadgrowe. He was previously head teacher at No. 422.

    The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.

  • 1940s

    Two prefabricated classrooms and two old weatherboard rooms from Williamstown were added to the school. A three-room weatherboard block was also added.

  • 1957

    The school football team won the Metropolitan State Schools Championship in 1957.

  • 1959

    The school basketball team won the district championship in 1959.

  • 1962

    The school became a teacher training school in 1962. Student teachers from the Toorak Teachers College trained at the school. Later student teachers from Frankston came to the school.

  • 1968

    The old weatherboard rooms were replaced by a library building opened in 1968.

  • 1970

    The school was renamed Moorabbin Primary School in 1970.

  • 2022

    Moorabbin Primary School is still in operation.
