The history of Mansfield Primary School

  • 1870s

Mansfield opened as a common school in 1872. It replaced No. 429. The first head teacher was John Elvins.

The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.

  • 1909

The Department of Education decided to open an Agricultural School based lobbying from locals.

  • 1911

A building for the Agricultural School was built on Mansfield's site for this secondary school.

  • 1916

The School Committee complained about the amount of space the Agricultural School took up on the site. A meeting was held and it was decided to combine both schools as a higher elementary school that included the secondary classes.

  • 1924

The school became a higher elementary school in 1924.

  • 1930s to 1940s

The school continued as a higher elementary school apart from during World War Two, when it was classified as a central school. More classrooms were required and the buildings from closing local schools were added to the site.

  • 1950s

Classroom extensions were added between 1954 to 1958.

  • 1963

Mansfield High School opened in 1963 and the secondary classes moved to the new school. Mansfield returned to being a primary school.

  • 1970

The school was renamed Mansfield Primary School in 1970.

  • 2022

Mansfield Primary School is still in operation.
