The history of Majorca Primary School
1860s
There were two schools in Majorca.
The first Majorca school opened as a common school in 1864.
The school wasn't recognised by the Board of Education, yet it remained open without aid.
It is not known when this school closed.
The first head teacher was Frederick O'Connell Lane, who taught 80 students.
A second school listed by the Board of Education was Majorca Common School (No. 764.)
The Board approved a grant for 75 pounds to build the school in 1867 (this was back when our money was called the Australian Pound). However, because of delays the school didn't open until 1868.
The first head teacher was George Wilmot.
1892
After many refusals, the Department of Education agreed to build a house at Majorca.
1914
The school was remodelled.
1973
Majorca State School in 1973. (Source J.T. Collins Collection, La Trobe Picture Collection, State Library of Victoria) 1980
