The history of Lilliput State School
1869
Lilliput opened as a common school in 1869.
The first head teacher was Richard Dixon. He was the head teacher for 37 years.
Classes were held in a wooden schoolhouse with a shingle roof.
1870s
A house was built for the head teacher in 1870. It had 2 rooms.
The school became a state school sometime between 1873 and 1878.
There were 68 students enrolled at the school in 1874.
The schoolhouse was not big enough for all of the students. Some students were taught in a large Aboriginal shelter made from bark, branches, leaves and grass. This type of shelter is called a mia-mia.
A new classroom was built in 1874 to replace the mia-mia.
Another 2 rooms were added to the teacher's house in 1878.
1888
The size of the school grounds was increased.
1904
The teacher's house was burnt down in August 1904.
1912
A new wooden school was built because the old schoolhouse had been damaged by termites.
1915
