The History of Leopold Primary School

  • 1870s

    The school opened as a common school in 1872. It was called Kensington Common School when it opened. The first head teacher was John Edgoose.

    The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.

  • 1892

    The school was renamed Leopold State School in 1892. The name of the local area had changed to Leopold a few years earlier.

  • 1897

    The number of students enrolled reached 120 in 1897.

  • 1904

    A new school building opened in 1904.

  • 1914

    The teacher's residence was replaced in 1914. The new house was on the opposite side of Kensington Road.

  • 1970

    The school was renamed Leopold Primary School in 1970.

  • 2022

    Leopold Primary School is still in operation.
