The history of Huntly Primary School

  • 1860

    Huntly was opened by the Church of England in 1860. A school had operated on the site from 1857. The open date was recorded when the school got financial aid from the government.

  • 1862

    The school became a common school in 1862.

  • 1870s

    Part of the original school building was destroyed in a wind storm in the 1870s. It was replaced by a solid brick building.

    The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.

  • 1935

    The Mothers' Club was formed in 1935.

  • 1940

    A pine tree plantation started in 1940. The trees would be sold when grown to raise money for the school.

  • 1960

    The school commemorated its 100th anniversary in 1960. The head teacher at the time was W. Baldwin and 50 students were enrolled.

  • 1970

    The school was renamed Huntly Primary School in 1970.

  • 2022

    Huntly Primary School is still in operation.
