The history of Horsham (No. 298) Primary School
1857
Horsham School opened in 1857 as a national school.
The first head teacher was James Simpson and he was helped by his wife.
Classes were held in a building that had been a private school until a new school was built.
This new school was big enough for 60 students and included a four-room house for the teacher.
1862
This school became a common school in 1862.
1865
The schoolhouse was renovated in 1865.
1870s
Horsham School became a state school between 1873 and 1878.
The number of students at the school was increasing and the schoolhouse was becoming crowded and run down.
The average number of students going to the school was 125 in 1876.
There were around 60 children who were unable to go to the school because the schoolhouse was not big enough, three rooms in the teacher's house were turned into classrooms to fit in another 44 students.
A new school was built in 1877. It was brick and had two large rooms and a verandah.
In 1878, the new schoolhouse was still not big enough for all of the students. The verandah was closed in to make another 2 classrooms.
1880
Two more classrooms were added in 1880.
1890
Another classroom was added in 1890.
The average number of students attending school was around 400.
1902
A corridor was enclosed to make another classroom.
1919
Students above grade 6 were moved to the local high school.
1929
The school was remodelled and a new section was built from Mount Gambier stone.
1966
One of the 3 main buildings was demolished and replaced by 4 classrooms.
1970
The school was renamed to Horsham Primary School in 1970.
At this time the school had thirteen classrooms, a library, an art room and a remedial room.
There were 482 students at the school and 20 teachers.
2010
Horsham (No. 298) closed in 2010 and was combined with Horsham North Primary School (No. 4926) to form Horsham Primary School (No. 5548).
