The history of Heidelberg Primary School

  • 1854

Heidelberg opened in 1854. The first head teachers were Mr and Mrs Hayhoe. The number of enrolled students was 68. Girls and boys were taught in separate areas.

  • 1862

The school became a common school around this time.

  • 1877

Some buildings were demolished and a new school was built where girls and boys were taught together. The new school was called Heidelberg State School. It was big enough for 150 students.

  • 1927

Around this time, the number of students at the school was increasing. A larger brick school building was built. A Mothers' Club was formed in 1927. They raised funds for a swimming pool and other school facilities.

  • 1950s

The number of students was increasing again. Temporary huts were used as classrooms. Other local schools were opened and Heidelberg became less crowded. The classroom huts were not needed and became part of a separate infant school, hall, canteen and art centre.

  • 1970

The school was renamed Heidelberg Primary School in 1970.

  • 2022

Heidelberg Primary School is still in operation.
