The history of Chewton Primary School
1870s
Chewton opened as a common school in 1870. The first head teacher was Robert William Tate. The number of students going to the school was 133 (74 boys and 59 girls).
A new brick schoolhouse was built in 1871.
The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.
1900
The number of students going to the school had grown to 333. The school was now overcrowded.
1911
A new school building opened in Hunter St.
1917
The old school building known locally as the 'Park School', was demolished.
1927
A pine tree plantation was created. The trees would be sold when grown to raise money for the school. The first trees were sold for 1,182 pounds (this was when our money was called the Australian Pound). The money was invested and used to buy equipment for the school.
1929
The Mothers' Club was formed. They raised money for the school.
1962
An event was held to recognise that the school had been open for 100 years. New gates were installed to mark the event.
1970
The school was renamed Chewton Primary School in 1970.
2022
Chewton Primary School is still in operation.
