The history of Barkstead Primary School

  • 1869

    Barkstead opened as a common school in 1869. It was opened by the owners of 2 local sawmills.

    The school had a bark roof when it opened which was eventually replaced with a shingled roof.

  • 1876

    This school became a state school in 1876.

  • 1962

    A new portable building replaced the old schoolhouse. It was opened by the Hon J.S Bloomfield who was a member of parliament.

  • 1970

    The name of the school changed to Barkstead Primary School in 1970.

  • 1971

    Barkstead Primary School closed in 1971.
