The history of Wangaratta Primary School

  • 1850

    Wangaratta opened as a national school in 1850. The first head teacher was Henry Howard.

  • 1853

    In 1853 there were 59 students enrolled and the average attendance was 25.

  • 1860s

    The school became a common school in 1862. It was given the number 643 in 1863.

  • 1873

    The school became a state school in 1873 when Edward P. Date was head teacher.

  • 1877

    A new school building was completed in 1877. It could accommodate 422 students.

    The building was officially opened by the Hon. W. Collard Smith, the Minister of Public Instruction.

  • 1914

    Prime Minister Andrew Fisher visited the school on 13th of May 1913 and referred to the children's greetings as 'one of the happiest memories of my official life'. The school was renovated that year.

  • 1939

    A pool was added to the school grounds in 1939.

  • 1969

    The old pool was replaced in 1969 with a modern School Learner Swimming Pool on the Faithful Street.

  • 1970

    The school was renamed Wangaratta Primary School in 1970.

  • 2022

    Wangaratta Primary School is still in operation.
