The history of New Gisborne Primary School

  • 1863

    The school was opened by the Church of England as a common school in 1863. The first head teacher was Devlin. It became New Gisborne Common School the same year.

  • 1873

    The school became a state school in 1873.

  • 1878

    Head Teacher Mr Lee starting teaching night school on Monday evenings.

  • 1910s

    A new school building opened in 1912. Classes were held in the Mechanics Hall from 1910 to 1911 while it was built.

  • 1932

    A bitumen tennis court was added in 1932.

  • 1963

    A new classroom was added in 1963.

  • 1970

    The school was renamed New Gisborne Primary School in 1970.

  • 1988

    New school buildings were completed in 1988 in time for the school’s 125th anniversary. The old weatherboard schoolhouse was demolished to make way for the new buildings.

  • 2000s

    6 new classrooms were added in 2005 and a courtyard was added in 2007 to tie the rooms together.

  • 2011

    There was a fire in the art room in 2011. The local community raised funds to replace the room.

  • 2022

    New Gisborne Primary School is still in operation.
