The history of Kingston Primary School

  • 1860s

    Kingston opened as a common school in 1865.

    The first head teacher was Joshua Thomas.

    The brick school building was finished the year before in 1864.

    A teacher's house was also built.

  • 1880

    Turlby was head teacher in 1880.

    He was followed by Drummond, Abercromby and Robert Hodgson.

  • 1900s

    Enrolment went up and down between 100 and 160.

    Classes were sometimes taught at the Church of England in town when there was overcrowding.

  • 1909

  • 1918

    WH Thomas was appointed head teacher in 1918.

  • 1950

    A new teacher's house was built in 1950.

    The head teacher at the time was D Featherstone.

  • 1970

    The name of the school changed to Kingston Primary School in 1970.

  • 1986

  • 2004

    Kingston closed in 2004.
