High productivity freight vehicles

Supporting the use of more efficient, safer, and environmentally friendly road freight combinations known as High Productivity Freight Vehicles (HPFVs) is one of the key road freight objectives outlined in the Victorian Freight Plan - Delivering the Goods and the HPFV plan, Moving More with Less.

Vehicles designed to higher safety standards

In Victoria, a HPFV is a heavy vehicle combination that exceeds 26 metres and/or has a gross combination mass greater than 68.5 tonnes, or a 20.0 metre semitrailer fitted with a quad-axle group operating at 50.5 tonnes.

The community and the freight industry are sharing the benefits of the more widespread use of road-freight combinations that are quieter, cleaner and feature technological innovations that boost safety.

The growth of larger vehicles that can carry more freight is essential in ensuring that the capacity of our road network expands to support the increase in the freight task, while also strengthening our connectedness and liveability to promote the success of Victorian businesses and primary producers and support job creation across our economy.

The government has provided significant investment in the road freight network, including bridge strengthening, to ensure HPFVs can operate at a higher gross combination mass (GCM).
