Road Management Act, regulations & codes

The purpose of the Road Management Act 2004 is to establish a coordinated management system for public roads that will promote safe and efficient state and local public road networks and the responsible use of our roads.

The Minister for Roads and Road Safety is responsible for the Road Management Act 2004 and a number of other Acts, including those listed below.

The latest versions of these Acts and Regulations are available from the Victorian Legislation and Parliamentary Documents website under Victorian Law Today.

  3. Then select 'Statutory rules in force'
  4. Type in the search field the name of the Act or Regulation
  5. Then select ‘Search’
  6. You can now select either the PDF or Word document to review or download

Note: Alternatively, at Victorian Law Today(opens in a new window) in the blue banner at the top select 'In force' then ‘Acts in force’ or ’Statutory rules in force’ and then select the relevant letter of the alphabet (e.g. ‘R’ for Road Management Act 2004). What Regulations have been made under the Road Management Act?

The following Regulations have been made under the Road Management Act 2004 and are now in operation.

Road Management (General) Regulations 2016(opens in a new window) (Statutory Rules)

Please note:

The Road Management (Works and Infrastructure) Regulations 2015 came into operation on 20 June 2015 and replaced the previous Road Management (Works and Infrastructure) Regulations 2005, which were revoked on 20 June 2015.

The Road Management (General) Regulations 2016 came into operation on 18 March 2016 and replaced the previous Road Management (General) Regulations 2005, which were revoked on 18 March 2016.

Codes of practice under the Road Management Act

Codes of Practice have been developed to provide practical guidance for road authorities and works and infrastructure managers, in the performance of their functions and duties under the Act.

Please note:
The new Road Safety Regulations 2019 came into operation on 30 September 2021 and replace the previous Road Safety (Vehicles) Interim Regulations 2020.
