What’s important?
Our Managed Motorway approach embraces holistic design thinking that focuses on preventing breakdown of flow and congestion. Our principles include:
- Understanding how many motorists will use the motorway, particularly during peak periods.
- Providing adequate, balanced capacity along the route to best accommodate traffic needs.
- Designing the mainline geometry to minimise turbulence; including weaving areas, entry ramp merging and diverges to exit ramps.
- Providing ramp designs that operate safely and enable management of traffic entering the motorway.
Motorway traffic safety is paramount as crashes not only impact people’s lives, but the efficiency and reliability of the motorway.
Design process
The iterative design process requires a route-based system approach to gain an understanding of current and future needs.
The decisions relating to one component of design can have implications for other components, as well as costs. The chart below provides an overview of the main components.
