Accessing Registration and Licensing data

Learn about the data that the Department manages and how requests to access this data can be made.

In managing Victoria’s vehicle registration, vehicle safety and driver licensing the Department of Transport and Planning collects and holds a range of data. Some of this data is publicly accessibly; other data that is not publicly available may be provided upon request.

On this page you’ll find information about the types of registration and licensing data you can either freely access or request.

What data is publicly available?

A range of data managed by the Department of Transport and Planning is publicly available and can be easily accessed by any interested party.

Sources for publicly available data include:

About open data

Open data is information that can be freely accessed and used. The Victorian Government introduced an open data policy in 2012. Called the DataVic Access Policy, it provides direction on the release, licensing and management of Victorian Government data so that it can be used and reused by the community and businesses. To learn more about the Victorian Government’s approach to open data, visit the DataVic website(opens in a new window).

In line with the Victorian Government's DataVic Access Policy(opens in a new window), the Department is committed to providing free and open data for public use.

To learn more about open data from the Department that you can access and use freely, visit the Department of Transport and Planning’s open data website(opens in a new window).

What data can be requested from the Department?

Requests for vehicle and driver statistics can be submitted to the Department. Entities with a specific legislative responsibility for law enforcement or transport may be able to access a wider range of data.

It’s important to note that not all data requests can be met. Each application is assessed against a range of legislative criteria before a decision to release data is made.

Freedom of Information

If you’re seeking personal data about yourself or access to a specific document held by the Department, you need to make a Freedom of Information request(opens in a new window) – this is a different process to making a request for registration and licensing data.

How to make a request for registration and licensing data

All requests for data must be made in writing using our Data Request Application Form. It will then be assessed against a range of privacy and security criteria. Please allow some time for the Department to assess your request.

Depending on the type of request, you may be required to enter into a formal data sharing agreement before we can provide you with the data you’ve requested.

This can take the form of:

  • an Information Protection Agreement for requests that relate to data intended to be used for research, law enforcement, transport purposes or by a charity
  • a Data Sharing Agreement for any other request.

Data requests costs

Data requests are subject to a fee. The fee for each request is determined as part the request assessment process.

How will the data be provided?

Data security, especially when personal data is involved, is the primary concern when transferring data.

If your request for data is approved, the specific requirements for transferring the data you’ve requested will be determined during the assessment of your request. You must review these requirements and ensure that you can comply with them.

How does the Department protect personal data?

Any personal information collected, handled, stored or disclosed by the Department is managed in accordance with the Road Safety Act 1986, Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 and the Health Records Act 2001.
