Undergraduate employment-based teaching degrees

Discover a new way to study teaching while you continue working, gain real experience and advance your career.

How undergraduate employment-based programs work

You could complete a bachelor of secondary or specialist education in 4-4.5 years with the support of:

  • paid employment in a government school while you study
  • a government-funded scholarship of $30,000, and
  • additional scholarships are available for First Nations people

La Trobe University and Federation University Australia will deliver these programs in 2025, providing the opportunity for people in targeted regional areas who have existing relationships with Victorian government secondary or specialist schools to upskill and obtain teaching qualifications.

Eligibility

To be eligible for these programs, you must:

  • currently be employed as an education support staff member in a Victorian Government Secondary or Specialist School
  • be embedded in a school community
  • be endorsed by a Victorian Government Secondary or Specialist School (Principal endorsement to support you during the program)

Each higher education provider will have their requirements for admission.

Selection is based on:

  • merit
  • specific rural & regional location
  • availability of places in the course

Priority applications

Priority will be given to participants in specific subject areas including:

  • core secondary subjects such as English, Maths, Science
  • special education and inclusive education

These will vary between the higher education providers and are subject to their own entry requirements.
