Nominations for the 2025 Victorian Training Awards are now open!
Share your story of success. We’d love to hear it.
Vocational education and training is essentially an exchange and learning system. Industry exchanges ideas about new and evolving approaches to production and services in our economy. TAFEs and other training providers develop learning models. Both of these create the environment for success in our economy and for learners.
I am always inspired by the journey to excellence of our nominees. It gives me tips and helps me strive to explore new approaches to vocational education and training.
Your story, or that of one of your colleagues, is worth telling and will help others engaged in vocational education in Victoria to achieve their goals.
Celebrating these stories helps the whole Victorian skills system improve and strive for more.
Whether you are an apprentice, trainee, student, teacher/trainer, employer, TAFE or other training provider, you are supporting the skills that Victoria’s communities and economy needs to grow and prosper.
I encourage you to reflect on the remarkable stories of previous Victorian Training Awards winners and finalists, the legacy they have left and the motivation they continue to inspire.
The effort is worth it, and don’t forget that many of our winners in the Victorian Training Awards go on to represent Victoria in the Australian Training Awards and are recognised as the best in country!
By nominating yourself of someone else you can showcase your best and further build the excellence of Victoria’s TAFE and skills system.

The Victorian Training Awards present the perfect opportunity to reflect on the dedication, innovation, and ambition that have shaped Victoria’s vocational education and training system.
Victoria’s TAFE Network is pivotal in delivering the skills, training and education that drive Victoria’s prosperity, equality and economic inclusion. We should be proud of our progress and continue to celebrate the remarkable achievements within our VET system.
In addition to celebrating the achievements of our sector, every year the Victorian Training Awards remind us of the ways in which skills and training change people’s lives – stories of graduates who are the first in their families to undertake post-secondary education, stories of dedicated teachers inspiring under-represented cohorts to take up trades, and stories of employers who understand the value of training and investing their staff.
I strongly encourage you to participate in these awards – to continue to recognise the leaders and role models in the Victorian VET system, including TAFEs, and to share and celebrate their stories. You might know an outstanding teacher or trainer, or a passionate apprentice or trainee making significant strides in their field. Maybe that person is you!
Explore this guide, find the support you need to submit your nomination, and most importantly, don’t wait – nominate today!

Why nominate?
Victorian Training Award winners are recognised as the best in the state in their category.
There are so many benefits to nominating for the awards – whether for your career or in your personal life. Not only is it a great opportunity to reflect on your achievements and development through your training journey, the VTAs also provide:
- opportunities for you to network with industry leaders and peers who are on similar journeys through training
- career opportunities
- advanced career progression
- cash prizes
- enhanced reputation and industry profile for employer and training provider finalists and winners.
You also have the opportunity to become part of the Victorian Training Awards Ambassador Program, which promotes and highlights the stories of previous VTA winners and finalists. The Ambassador Program also provides further media, speaking and networking opportunities for those that get involved.
Winners in categories aligned with the Australian Training Awards attract national recognition by representing Victoria at the Australian Training Awards in late 2025, if selected.
Australian Training Awards
The Australian Training Awards are the peak national awards that showcase best practice in vocational education and training (VET). The Australian Training Awards recognise and celebrate excellence and play an important role in promoting the benefits of VET.
Winners from each state and territory’s training awards compete for a national award title.
This has led to Australia-wide awareness and respect for skill-based careers and skills excellence.

Matthew Tyquin
2024 Apprentice of the Year
Matthew Tyquin’s journey through butchery began at age 15 when he was a clean-up kid at Ashburton Meats. After completing a Bachelor of Biomedicine at La Trobe University he gave it the chop, realising that his passion lay with butchery. He embarked on an apprenticeship and a Certificate III in Meat Processing Retail Butcher at William Angliss Institute.
Impressed by the craftmanship in butchery, he was keen to adopt the paddock to plate philosophy. In the workplace, he became a strong advocate for animal sustainability and promoted ethically sourced meat to customers. He spent extra-curricular hours researching and developing new products to ensure that no part of the animal was wasted.
In 2022, Matthew was awarded World Champion Butcher Apprentice at the World Butchers Challenge (USA). He’s a testament to the complementary relationship between quality training and dedication, and his manager is happy that Matthew’s unique products have become best sellers.
Pearl Dunn
2023 Koorie Student of the Year
Pearl had a lifelong dream of becoming a nurse and in April 2023, she proudly graduated with the Diploma of Nursing from SuniTAFE. Despite being hit with a raft of challenges when her studies began in 2020, her resilience saw her reap the rewards of achievement. Now she has a fulfilling position in aged care.
Pearl’s nursing training was a great complement during her time as a member of the Mallee District Aboriginal Services Board where she worked for better health outcomes for the Murray River community. On graduating, Pearl became a role model for her community, supporting others to embrace nursing career.
South West TAFE’s Mobile Skills Lab – Aged Care Collaboration
2024 Industry Collaboration Award
The Mobile Skills Lab is a purpose-built motorhome created to simulate an aged care workplace environment. It’s a first-of-its-kind in Victoria and an innovation sparked through the collective intelligence of aged care industry partners, Eventide, Edgarley Assisted Living, Calvary Community Care, and disability provider Mulleraterong, and South West TAFE. The lab provides the opportunity for remotely located learners to gain the experience they need. It was launched to solve the ongoing challenges of attracting and retaining qualified and experienced staff in regional and rural areas.
Fitted out with interactive learning resources, including state-of-the-art training manikins, the Mobile Skills Lab provides core skills and experience in the early stage of employment for a Certificate III in Individual Support. By 2024 the initiative had supported over 75 trainees (achieving 442% growth since implementation) and has increased industry trainee partners by 111%.
Prior to the Mobile Skills Lab understaffing prevented suitable inductions and training supervision.
