Nominations for the 2024 Victorian Training Awards are now open.

The Victorian Training Awards showcase the best of the best in Victoria’s vocational education system. Could you – or someone you know – be a part of this inspiring awards program?

This year is a special one for the Victorian Training Awards. 2024 marks the award’s 70th anniversary. Since 1954, the Victorian Training Awards have celebrated achievement, aspiration, and empowerment through skills.

A lot has changed since 1954, of course.

Technological and social changes have transformed our economy and the trades and industries that support it. But what hasn’t changed is people’s dreams to find good, fulfilling jobs in growing industries.

Our current transition from a carbon-intensive to a green economy is the challenge we face and the opportunity we must leverage for future prosperity.

In the coming 70 years, the achievements of our apprentices, trainers and training organisations will surpass our imaginations.

This year, as you prepare your nomination for yourself, your organisation, or someone who’s made an impressive contribution to vocational education, I encourage you to reflect on this remarkable story of Victorian achievement: the workers and teachers who have come before us and helped build our nation-leading vocational education and training system.

I also encourage you to look forward to the future: to the vocational education heroes of tomorrow whose best achievements are ahead of them.

This is your chance to help write the story of the next 70 years of vocational education success in Victoria.

On this, our 70th anniversary, I encourage you to nominate for the 2024 Victorian Training Awards.

Best wishes.

As we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Victorian Training Awards, I reflect on all the years of passion, innovation and aspiration that have brought us to this point: lives transformed through skills, jobs that have supported families, and vocational education and training (VET) graduates who have helped build our state.

It’s humbling to draw that thread from the past to the present, but it’s also inspiring to look at where Victoria is now.

In 2024, Victoria boasts a nation-leading vocational education system, with 12 TAFEs and 4 dual-sector universities.

And it’s clear that a robust vocational education system will remain at the centre of Victoria’s ongoing growth and prosperity, just as it was when the Victorian Training Awards were first launched in 1953.

We must be proud of where we’ve come from and continue celebrating the outstanding achievements of our VET system.

In that spirit, I encourage you to get involved in this program. You may know someone who’s an excellent teacher or trainer or a passionate apprentice or trainee who’s breaking new ground in the industry. Perhaps that person is you.

Read through this guide, seek out the support you need to get your nomination across the line, and above all, don’t hesitate – nominate.

Here’s to another 70 inspirational years.

Thomas Patterson

Winner, 2023 Teacher or Trainer of the Year Award

After 15 years of working in the construction industry as a carpenter and licenced builder, Thomas leapt into VET teaching to share his knowledge and skills. Teaching at Outer Northern Trade Training Centre, he delivers the Certificate II Building and Construction Pre-apprenticeship (Carpentry) and the Certificate I Construction Pathways.

To prepare students more thoroughly for the workforce, Thomas implemented real-world tasks. We have a professional writer on board to help you write the best possible nomination.

Once you have an initial draft of your nomination, with responses to each of the selection criteria, our writer can review your draft and give you some feedback on how you can refine your responses.

It’s free and it’s easy. Just send us an email(opens in a new window).

In 2023, 70% of finalists took up writing assistance.

Writing tips

  • Use active voice
    • for example, I did this, I achieved this.
  • Use topic sentences
    • for example, I chose to study a Certificate III in Plumbing because I was motivated to find a career that challenged me while providing stability and the ability to own my own business.
    • or, I showed that I can be a passionate advocate for training when I volunteered to give a presentation on my course at an online forum that my training provider organised for people who were interested in starting this course next year.
  • Take advantage of your full word limits
  • Show evidence for what you write
    • for example, tell us the actions you took to achieve something and the results of your actions.
    • or, show measurable outcomes with numbers and statistics.
