Recovery progress
Storms in Victoria from December 2023 to January 2024 included heavy rain and strong winds damaging properties across more than one third of Victoria’s 79 municipalities.
Many of the areas affected had previously experienced impacts in the October 2022 Victorian floods with recovery work still ongoing.
We worked closely with councils to support their local recovery efforts and coordinated with government and non-government services to meet broader recovery needs.

Emergency Recovery Hotline
The Emergency Recovery Hotline was available to connect people to key support programs. More than 300 calls were made to the hotline and triaged to programs including Recovery Support.
Recovery Support program
The Recovery Support program continues to help people impacted by the December 2023 to January 2024 Victorian storms and floods. So far, more than 500 people have accessed assistance to support their recovery journey.
Clean-up program
To help people understand the extent of damage to their homes, we provided free structural assessments by independent contractors for eligible properties. These assessments identified hazards like asbestos or mould, and identified if property owners were eligible for free hazard removal or structure demolishment.
All properties in the Clean-up Program underwent cultural heritage assessments and site supervisors were inducted on Aboriginal cultural management practices.
Next steps
Locally-led recovery is at the centre of long-term recovery to ensure that the support meets local needs.
We continue to work with local councils and residents to understand their ongoing needs. An important consideration is that those who were re-impacted so soon after the October 2022 Victorian floods, may be at different stages of recovery.
