Yalanie is in her first year of a school-based apprenticeship in engineering fabrication trade at Catten Industries. She’s still at high school while starting her career - studying towards her VCE Vocational Major, attending TAFE once a week and working at Catten Industries two days a week.
"I was attracted to doing this apprenticeship in manufacturing because I love anything that includes making something.
Here at Catten Industries we make things for trains, trucks, renewable energy. We have machines that are able to fold material, cut material.
Working with another apprentice I run the Form In Place Gasket machine, which makes gaskets that are used on doors to seal electrical enclosures and cabinets.
There’s heaps of things that you can do in manufacturing."
"My message to young women thinking about a career in manufacturing is definitely believe in yourself and if you’re passionate about it - just go for it."
