Maidstone Construction update – November 2024 – New travel changes

We’ve installed new tram tracks, overhead poles, wiring and kerbing on Hampstead and Williamson roads to connect the new maintenance facility to the tram network.

The intersection of Hampstead and Williamson roads is now open now that these works are complete. The intersection has been changed which may affect how you travel through the local area.

Permanent travel changes

With the new tram tracks on Hampstead and Williamson roads, there are permanent travel changes in place to allow the new trams, vehicles and pedestrians to move safely around Maidstone and Maribyrnong.

Road

• New traffic lights at the intersection of Hampstead and Williamson roads allow for a dedicated right turn lane to allow drivers to turn onto Williamson Road.
• New traffic lights on Williamson Road allow trams to move from the tram corridor onto Williamson Road.
• Drivers travelling south on Wests Road can no longer turn right into Williamson Road. Drivers can use the signalised intersection of Wests Road and Waterford Avenue to turn right.

Tram

• Raised concrete sections, known as separation kerbing, have been installed on either side of the tram tracks on Hampstead Road. This kerbing creates a physical barrier between trams and vehicles to protect everyone’s safety.

Pedestrian

• With trams moving through the intersection of Hampstead and Williamson roads, the pedestrian crossing across Hampstead Road has been removed. Pedestrians can use the signalised crossing at Williamson and Wests Road.

Future changes

In 2025:

A new pedestrian crossing will be installed across Hampstead Road, closer to Wattle Road.

A new shared use path for pedestrians and bike riders will be built along the western side of Hampstead Road.

A new bus stop will open on Hampsted Road near the entrance to the tram facility on Hampstead Road.

Keeping up with our progress

During our recent works we’ve:

• Laid 1.3 kilometres of new tram tracks and overhead cables
• Installed 33 new tram poles
• Poured 463 cubic metres of track slab
• 400 workers working around the clock for 20 days on the roads, in the tram corridor and on the project site.

Your new G Class trams

Melbourne’s first G Class Trams are on the way with manufacturing underway in Dandenong.

The new trams will be more accessible and have more space, accommodating 150 passengers – which is about double the capacity of current high floor trams on the network.

The three section, 25 metre long trams will feature more doors, handrails and improvements to displays and passenger information – making it easier and more accessible for people to use public transport.

The G Class trams are also being built to be more sustainable and energy-efficient, using less electricity compared to earlier classes of Melbourne trams.

The first G Class trams are expected to begin testing on the network in 2025 and will roll out on routes 57, 59 and 82.
