Hear about three-year-old kinder and early start kindergarten.

They’re growing up so fast! They will get to go to kindergarten soon - how do you know when they are ready?

The house is so quiet when the kids are at kinder, and it is such a big step for them. I worried a bit when my children first started but they settled in quickly.

I don’t know if Charlie is ready to go; she is so shy around new kids, and I think she might find it hard.

My kids were very shy before they started kindergarten too but look at them now, they make friends so easily. Starting kindergarten at three years old and going for two years before school was the best decision we made. The kids learnt so much, like how to play with other children and became much more confident. Kindergarten taught them to understand their feelings and how to talk and play much better with us and other kids.

Yes, but sometimes I think they can do that at the playground or at home. Why do they have to start now? Can’t they just learn how to play with us?

It’s not just the socialising that is beneficial - kinder programs are based on play and teach kids how to think creatively and develop their English and number skills. They do many things that the playground can’t teach them. Together at kinder, children make discoveries, use their imagination and solve problems. The teachers who lead the programs have been to university and make sure all kids are included, so even if Charlie is shy at the beginning, they will support her and make her feel comfortable.

That makes me feel much better about everything. I think it will be good for Charlie to get used to learning before starting school. The other thing I am worried about is how much kinder costs.

From 2023, Three- and Four-Year Old Kinder will be free across Victoria, at participating services.

For three-year-olds, this means from 5 and up to 15 hours per week of a kindergarten program

For four-year-olds, this means 15 hours per week (600 hours a year)

Free Kinder means a saving of up to $2,500 per child, each year at a standalone kindergarten service.

Free Kinder subsidies are available for kinder programs at long day care services as well, saving families $2,000. This is great for families who have to balance work and other commitments and need extra hours of care.

Enrolling through ESK guarantees the full 15 hours each week in both Three-Year-Old and Four-Year-Old Kindergarten programs.

That sounds great – how do we know if we are eligible and how do we apply?

ESK is available to children who are at least three years old by the 30 April in the year they are enrolled to attend kinder and are:

• from a refugee or asylum seeker background, or

• are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, or

• are known to child protection.

Wow! Charlie turned three at the beginning of the year, is she old enough to start?

There is an age calculator page that will help you with that. On the website, you can find the calculator and get in touch with some local kinders to talk about Charlie’s eligibility. I will send you the website to have a look - it is vic.gov.au/kinder/translations.

If you have any questions, you can also contact your local kindergarten service and ask them about the programs they offer, including about their fees. Kindergarten services are able to access a free translation service to support you in your language.

You can also contact your local Council, or your local Department of Education and Training office to find a kindergarten service in your area. To get help in your language, you can call the National Translating and Interpreting Service on 131 450, ask the interpreter to call the number of your local council or Department of Education and Training office, and the interpreter will stay on the phone call and interpret.
