Our lives are becoming increasingly digital.
With more sensitive, personal and financial information stored online than ever, it’s important to make sure our accounts are safe from cybercriminals.
You can add an extra layer of security by turning on multi-factor authentication (MFA)(opens in a new window).
MFA combines a secure password with proof it's you, like a one-time code sent to your phone or email, a scan of your face or fingerprint or a time-based code from an authenticator app.
Stolen, weak or reused passwords are the most common ways that cybercriminals hack into an online account. MFA makes it harder to break into an account, even if a cybercriminal has your password.
The Department of Government Services is encouraging Victorians to improve their cyber safety by turning on MFA on their online accounts. These accounts include email, online banking and any other accounts that hold personal information.
Each service has its own steps to set up MFA. So be sure to follow the prompts when a trusted website asks you to turn on MFA.
