Safer Motorcycling Grants Program
The $3.5M Safer Motorcycling Grants Program funds new and innovative projects aimed at improving motorcycle safety in the short and long term.
Research organisations and industry can apply for funding to support projects that will help increase the safety of motorcyclists on our roads.
We’re looking for applications for innovative projects across the themes of Technology and Intelligent Transport Solutions (ITS), Education and Research, or Motorcycle Policy and Law.
Applications can cover a broad range of priority areas including protective gear, safety technologies, novice riders, post-crash care, speed, or rider and driver behaviour.
Saving motorcycle riders’ lives and preventing serious injuries remains a key road safety challenge. Motorcyclists are more vulnerable to injury than other motorists and motorcycle riding continues to increase in popularity.

What forms would I need to complete as a part of my application process on SmartyGrants?
When creating a new submission on SmartyGrants, you will have an Introduction form to begin your application. Once you submit the introduction form, the Program team will include the additional application forms on SmartyGrants which includes the Organisation & Project Eligibility Form and the Application & Project Details form.
You will be notified via SmartyGrants email when these forms are made available. These forms are required to be submitted within the closing date of this Program. Please factor this within your timeframes for preparing your application.
How many applications can I submit under the Safer Motorcycling Grants Program?
You can submit more than one application.
Please note that in addition to the assessment criteria, projects will also be prioritised to ensure a range of projects are funded that align with all safe system pillars.
Does the Grant Program support infrastructure projects and trials?
Infrastructure (capital) projects such as barrier installation, intersection upgrades, traffic calming measures and road improvements, are not eligible under this grant program.
Infrastructure-related project proposals that do not directly impact on the Victorian road network may be considered (for example, data analysis, literature reviews, or trials of innovative treatments where the trial is not conducted on the Victorian road network).
How can I check the status of my application?
Once you have submitted an online application, you will receive a confirmation email with a PDF copy of you grant submission attached.
You may view the status of your application on the SmartyGrants website. Information about the status of your application can be viewed by clicking on the application ID number from the My Submissions page.
Will I have to sign a contract to receive the grant funding?
Successful applicants will be required to enter into a legally binding grant agreement with DTP for the delivery of the relevant project. DTP is under no obligation to provide any funding until a grant agreement has been executed. The funding payment will be based on agreed milestones.
My application was unsuccessful. Can I appeal this?
There will be no opportunity to appeal the outcome of the application process. DTP will inform the applicants of the outcome and discuss the application further.
What support is available during the application process?
Road Safety Victoria Team at the Department of Transport and Planning is managing the grants program and will support applicants during the application process and also during project delivery.
We encourage applicants to email safermotorcyclinggrants@transport.vic.gov.au with any questions on the application process or to organise a time to meet with our staff.
