Wai-Hong is a world leader in malaria and infectious diseases. Her research has transformed the understanding of how the two most deadly malaria parasites Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax infect humans.

Wai-Hong has identified and characterised key players that exist at the interface between malaria parasites and human cells and proteins.

Her study of the molecular and structural mechanisms of how malaria parasites enter red cells provides a blueprint for the design of novel drugs, vaccines and diagnostic targets against malaria.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, she led a collaborative research consortium to develop antibody-based therapies against COVID-19.

As co-Chair of the WEHI Biologics Initiative, she established the first nanobody platform in Australia using immunised Australian alpacas to facilitate rapid generation of antibodies.

Beyond research, Wai-Hong proudly advocates for diversity of thought and culture in the workplace and actively supports the integration of young international scientists into the Australian scientific community.
