[Kaya - Outstanding Sporting Achievement Award Primary]
Kaya Kandemir:
Jiu jitsu makes me feel strong, confident, and tough. I love that it is one on one. That I need to dig deep and be confident in myself when I step on the mat to compete.
My name is Kaya Kandemir and I compete in Jiu Jitsu. I started Jiu Jitsu when I was 4 years old, inspired by Mikail Tamöz, known as the Anatolian wolf.
I would describe Jiu Jitsu as like a game of human chess, where you need skill and strategy to control your opponent. It's a martial art that teaches discipline, respect, and self-defence.
I stay focused by setting goals and reminding myself why I love the sport. Gaining my grey and black belt was a fantastic moment that showed the result of my training and discipline. I also love learning new techniques such as a helicopter arm bar.
My greatest achievement in Jiu Jitsu was traveling to Abu Dhabi to compete in front of 15,000 people and winning the world championship. Attending with my teammates, where we brought home a lot of medals, was priceless.
My sport has given me so much, including the opportunity to travel and compete at the highest level and meet some of my heroes. It has also made me more confident, disciplined, and determined.
To other young athletes, I would say never give up. Trust the process and enjoy the journey. Hard work always pays off, and every challenge is an opportunity to grow. Remember REF: respect, effort, and fun.
