Victoria’s child protection workforce – Caroline

Intro

0:01

I do the Child Protection role

0:03

and have done for a long time,

0:04

because I really enjoy the work that I do.

0:06

I find that it's very fulfilling and very rewarding.

0:10

I am able to vary the roles that I do,

0:14

and certainly at After Hours,

0:15

at least the flexibility in my work is very family friendly.

0:21

My name is Caroline,

0:21

I'm a Child Protection Practitioner

0:23

with the After Hours Child Protection Service

0:25

within the Department of Families, Fairness, and Housing.

After Hours

0:28

After Hours is the crisis component of Child Protection.

0:32

So we operate out of general business hours.

0:36

So 24 hours over the weekends and public holidays

0:38

and after 5 o'clock and before 9:00 AM in the morning,

0:42

and we deal with general crisis only situations.

First Impressions

0:47

My first impression of the industry was,

0:49

"Wow. This is really interesting.

0:52

Something that I can really feel

0:55

that I can make a difference in."

0:56

I've always had a, quite a huge sense of social justice,

1:01

so this line of work certainly fits in

1:03

with what my sense of personal justice

1:06

is in trying to assist families and children.

1:09

What's kept me in this job for so long is the ability

1:12

to move within the department into different roles.

1:16

So if I've ever gotten to a point,

1:18

where I've felt that I'm a little bit stale

1:21

or not enjoying the work, as much as what I would like to,

1:24

there's an ability to move into a different role,

1:27

learn new skills.

1:28

So that's probably the biggest thing

1:30

as to why I've lasted so long.

1:32

Also, I very much enjoy working

1:34

with the families that we do.

1:37

It's very challenging work,

1:38

and that certainly keeps me interested.

Advice

1:41

The advice I'd give to people, who are looking at a career

1:44

in Child Protection is that it can be a very rewarding

1:47

and very fulfilling role.

1:49

However, it is a very difficult role.

1:51

There's lots of challenges in working with families

1:54

that are most vulnerable in our community.

1:56

However, it is exceptionally rewarding.

1:59

I wouldn't have lasted in this job for 27 years

2:01

without having a sense of achievement and reward

2:04

and a sense of being able to contribute

2:06

to helping those that are in most need.
