A day in the life of... Libby: Family Violence Practitioner

0:00
My name is Libby.
0:01
I'm a family violence practitioner.
0:03
I work at WAYSS Women's Refuge.
0:09
The goal of a refuge is,
0:12
first and foremost safety.
0:16
It's about empowering her.
0:17
It's about helping with material aid to help them rebuild their lives,
0:23
to get away from that awful situation. And, it needs to feel like home.
0:30
So my background
0:31
for over 20 years of my working life, I was Production Manager
0:36
and then my last role for over a decade was a coffee roaster Production Manager.
0:41
I loved the fast pace.
0:42
I loved the challenge in a male dominated industry.
0:45
But I wanted to do something for the community.
0:47
I wanted to volunteer somewhere.
0:50
So there was a speaking up program,
0:53
which was a volunteer, sort of an advocacy program.
0:56
And then that just ignited something in me
0:59
that I really felt that
1:02
my experience in being a victim survivor, I thought that
1:06
I am the best person for this kind of role.
1:12
I'd had no academic
1:14
education at all, so I had only finished high school.
1:17
So my education journey began at Chisholm
1:20
by completing the undergrad in Community Mental Health
1:24
and AOD.
1:26
It was a massive challenge
1:29
but I just had a lot of support through work.
1:33
Extra study leave, reduced case load.
1:36
So I had all the tools and all the support around me to succeed.
1:41
The most rewarding thing for me.
1:43
is being that stepping stone that will help them
1:47
believe that they can move on and rebuild.
