La Trobe precinct

An ecosystem of interlinked education, healthcare, industry, commerce and community.

Located 14 kilometres North-East of the CBD, close to 70,000 people work or study in the La Trobe National Employment and Innovation Cluster (NEIC). It is home to several interlinked industry, research and educational areas, as well as commercial business and retail centres, and well-established residential communities.

The Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) is working with key stakeholders to promote and guide investment, connectivity and growth within La Trobe. DTP will continue to identify and manage partnerships and investment opportunities to ensure well-co-ordinated growth across the precinct.

Heidelberg Health Precinct

The Heidelberg health precinct, in the south of the La Trobe NEIC, is Victoria’s second largest medical precinct. It is host to the Austin and Repatriation hospitals and prominent healthcare training and research institutions such as the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute. These health facilities are a major employer and part of the NEIC’s ecosystem of medical research, skills development and training, as well as being a core contributor to the area’s economy.

La Trobe University

La Trobe University’s vibrant Bundoora Campus is a world leading research and teaching centre on diverse, impact-focused priority fields including digital technologies and transformation, biosciences, sustainable food and agriculture, and medical and health sciences. La Trobe University’s ‘City of the Future’ transformation plan aims to deliver thousands of new homes for the area alongside new research and educational facilities.

Northland Urban Renewal Precinct

Also within the La Trobe NEIC is the Northland Urban Renewal Precinct, a significant employment centre with capacity to host residential and industrial growth into the future. Further east, the Heidelberg Business Park employs over 4,500 people across 600 businesses within industries ranging from manufacturing to construction and wholesaling.

Transport and connectivity in La Trobe

Two proposed Suburban Rail Loop stations, at Bundoora and Heidelberg, will enhance connectivity within the NEIC while also linking La Trobe to Melbourne’s network of premier health, education and innovation precincts.
