After an emergency or natural disaster, there’s often an increase in people wanting to donate money or goods to help affected communities.

Fundraising scammers can take advantage of this and set up fake fundraisers.

Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV)(opens in a new window) can help with charity and fundraising scam issues.

Follow these tips to make sure your donations reach those in need:

  1. Choose well-known charities. If you’re unsure, check the Australian Charity Register(opens in a new window).
  2. Unexpected calls, visits or emails from charities could be the sign of a scam, especially if they are asking for money. Contact charities directly using verified details from their official website.
  3. Don't share personal, credit card or online account details unless you're sure the recipient is a legitimate charity.
  4. Ensure in-person fundraisers have proper ID and always ask for a receipt.

If you suspect a charity is fake, report it to CAV(opens in a new window).
