Associate Professor Ada Cheung is a renowned endocrinologist who is a global leader in transgender health. She's passionate about fairness and making sure everyone gets the treatment they need. This comes partly from her own experiences of facing challenges.
Her work with the trans community began in 2016. Ada started working in a clinic after hearing how health services were refusing care to trans people. She observed marked health inequity trans people experienced.
Ada established the Trans Health Research Group at the University of Melbourne. This group is pioneering co-designed research and clinical service delivery in trans health. They are addressing the biggest health issues facing the trans community.
Ada is a Councillor of the Endocrine Society of Australia and a member of the Committee on Diversity and Inclusion at the US Endocrine Society.
In 2024 Cosmos Magazine named Ada as 1 of 50 most inspirational and remarkable women in Australian science.
Ada's research has had significant impact leading to the development of:
- new gender clinics
- a statewide training program for health professionals
- clinical guidelines.
Ada is also a great communicator. She explains science in the media and advocates for transgender rights. Ada received the GLOBE LGBT Ally of the Year and the University of Melbourne Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences Excellence in Public Engagement Award.
