Principals are invited to express interest in an opportunity to employ First Nations peoples into Education Support and paraprofessional roles, with the view of supporting candidates to become fully qualified teachers and long-term members of the teaching workforce.

The Aspiring Koorie Teachers (AKT) Now program is a Koorie Workforce Attraction and Retention Strategy. It was established by the Victorian government to attract and retain new and returning First Nations Peoples into the school workforce, supporting First Nations candidates to complete qualifications in education while undertaking paid employment in schools.

This is an opportunity for Principals to recruit Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff with skills, knowledge and lived experience that strengthens the diversity of their workforce and enriches the educational environments that support student learning.

Principals are invited to express interest in employing AKT Now candidates as Education Support (ES) or paraprofessional roles within their schools. During their employment, candidates will be engaging in one of the following learning streams:

Higher education stream – Initial Teacher Education students in the later period of their undergraduate or postgraduate studies to become fully qualified teachers
VET program stream – vocational students enrolled in the Certificate IV in School Based Education Support.

This Privacy Statement outlines how personal information will be handled as part of the host school Expression of Interest process for the AKT Now initiative.

Data collected

The name, role and contact email address of the appropriate school representative completing an EOI submission.
A summary of the cultural competence and inclusion practices of the school completing an EOI submission.
A summary of the vacancies and current recruitment challenges experienced by the school completing an EOI submission.

All information collected will be handled in accordance with the Privacy Data and Protection Act 2014 (Vic), the Health Records Act 2001 (Vic) and the Public Records Act 1973 (Vic).

Purpose and use of data collected

The purpose for collecting this information, via the Victorian Government’s Single Digital Presence (SDP) platform, is to provide schools opportunity to support future First Nations teachers through employment-based studies.

Information collected will only be disclosed to AKT Now program staff within Koorie Outcomes Division, and third-party recruitment suppliers’ authorised staff for supporting resolution of schools’ vacancies through the AKT Now program. The information collected may also be disclosed to department staff who need to know in accordance with the department's privacy policy and disclosed where otherwise permitted by law.

Means of collection and storage of data

The information will be collected on the SDP platform. Only those with a need to access the information for the purposes of the project or related reporting will have permission to access the information. Your information will be stored on secure department servers and will only be used for the purposes described above.

Collected information, where indicated, will be sent in a secure manner to the AKT Now third-party recruitment suppliers, Victorian Aboriginal Community Services Association Ltd and AFL SportsReady Ltd. These recruitment suppliers are subject to the same obligations as the department under Victorian privacy law to store and protect your information securely.
