Using data to solve problems helps us deliver better services to Victorians.

Here at the Department of Government Services, our Data and Analytics Service (DaAS) takes on digital challenges of all sizes.

We use data and analytics to tell stories and build digital capability across a range of government areas.

Here are a few examples of how we’re working with our colleagues across government to support their work.

Financial assistance for victims of crime

We’ve been working with The Department of Justice and Community Safety on their new Victims of Crime Financial Assistance Scheme, which makes it easier for victims to get financial assistance and other support without needing to go to court.

With the most up-to-date crime data, our team forecast future demand for the scheme. They built a picture of the funding, expected payments and staff needed to support the scheme.

DJCS launched this scheme in November last year, allowing victims of violent crime to access support when they need it.

Mobile road safety cameras

It’s important to feel and be safe on and around our roads.

We’ve worked with Victoria Police to analyse data on high crash-risk and speed-related problem areas in the north western region of Victoria.

This helped Victoria Police plot the best locations and operating times of mobile road safety cameras to improve road safety in the region.

Building a sustainable future for regional Victoria

Each region of Victoria is unique. When it comes to developing ways to drive growth in these economies, it’s important to understand what each region needs.

We’ve worked with the Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions to create interactive data dashboards. The dashboards use graphs and images to tell the story of each region.

Communities and businesses now have data tools with information about their region at their fingertips.
