The Victorian Training Awards 2023 Apprentice of the Year(opens in a new window), Leela Subramaniam has continued to dominate the cooking world, taking out a prestigious international award recently.

Leela, who completed a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery(opens in a new window) in 2022 as a mature-age student, was awarded the highest honour at the World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics Awards (WFCPA), winning Gold in the Outstanding Student Achievement Award Category.

Leela competed against the best of the best from other countries including the USA, Canada, UK and China to win the coveted award, and is a wonderful ambassador and role model for others who are considering learning new skills or up-skilling.

“Training at Chisholm built my confidence and gave me several life-changing opportunities, Leela said. Previously, I was nervous and afraid to make a mistake, but TAFE provided a nurturing space for me to learn, free from judgement”.

Working as a senior sous chef managing 8 kitchen staff at Flinders Hotel on the Mornington Peninsula, Leela now has her sights set on an internship at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Europe.

Her ultimate dream is to create a social enterprise restaurant that provides training for disadvantaged youth in remote areas.
