Our Consumer Affairs Victoria’s Renting Taskforce is carrying out inspection blitzes of rental properties on the market to make sure they meet the rental minimum standards.

Renting taskforce inspections have been completed in three areas: the south-west suburb of Werribee, Clayton in the north-east and Melbourne’s inner-city suburb of Fitzroy.

We are cracking down on a range of renting offences including cases of not advertising a property at a fixed price and not lodging a bond.

The taskforce has issued over 40 fines totalling more than $450,000 since March 2024.

If a property isn’t up to standard, the taskforce will work with agents and rental providers to make sure repairs happen. This process supports renters to move into safe and liveable homes.

Moving a renter into a property that doesn’t meet minimum standards is an offence. Doing so can result in fines or maximum penalties of $11,000+ for individuals and $59,000+ for companies.

If you suspect a rental property is being falsely advertised or does not meet minimum standards, report it with the rental property complaint form.
