My Story, My Future – Interview Tips and Tricks

Job interviews can be intimidating. When preparing for an interview, it's important to dress appropriately for the role you're applying for. If you're going for a job in a bank or office professional attire, such as a suit, would be the best choice. If you're applying for work in a factory or café, smart casual attire would be a better choice. Remember to make sure your clothes are clean and ironed.

When you're going for an interview, it's good to have an elevator pitch prepared. This is a 30-second speech, talking about your record, and your experience. You should mention what your offense was and make a point of taking responsibility for it.

The bulk of your speech should focus on positive changes you've made, things you've learned and accomplished and what you can offer to them and their business. This could include volunteering study and employment completed while in prison, programs you participated in past work achievements or short courses you've completed.

When giving the speech, be sure to use good body language, make good eye contact, sit up straight and don't cross your arms.

The interviewer may ask you about your criminal record or you may choose to bring it up. Having a pitch prepared should help you feel confident to talk about your record.

Let's look at an example of a good elevator pitch.

Four years ago, I was charged with theft and I served 12 months for it. It's something I really regret doing and I've been working to take control of my life since then. I enrolled in a training program for warehousing and got my certificate 3. I was employed as a warehouse supervisor while in prison and was responsible for training and mentoring new offenders. Since I was released, I've been attending a support group for ex-offenders. I've spent a lot of time trying to turn things around and I'd like to continue moving forward in this direction with your company.
